A notable typographer and scholar, "Diaconul Coresi" lived in the 16th century and printed the Tetraevangheliar (a New Testament translation of the four Gospels), being the first book written in the Romanian language. It was based on the old Romanian translations of the Holy Scriptures, with the adaptations made by the priests from the "St. Nicholas" Church in Scheii Brasovului (attested by testimonies from 1292), where the first school in Romania also functioned, from 1495.
Working in Transylvania, Coresi played an important role in the development of early Romanian culture and literature.
